Community Project 2025

About the nothing_mycelium

The Nothing_Mycelium was a 2-week long CMF design and refinement for the Nothing Community Edition Project 2025 organized by electronics brand, Nothing in early 2025.

The brief this time was to reinterpret the CMF of the Nothing Phone 3(a) and propose colors and finishes that would resonate with Nothing’s audiences and fall in line with their design language and company beliefs.

Role of nature + Age of anxiety

We are surrounded by rapidly evolving technological advances that continue to reshape our lives in profound ways. People today are filled with worry, anxiety, and uncertainties about the future. What is the one constant that still grounds us amidst this whirlwind of change and turmoil?

Discovering community in nature

Looking closely at the intricate textures found in rocks, trees, leaves, vegetables, corals, and other natural materials, I am searching for a sense of tactility, a dynamic flow, and a compelling story that resonates deeply with the overarching concept of community. Each of these elements offers unique insights and connections that can inspire collective experiences and shared narratives.

Mycelium as a choice

Grows organically as a network under a lush cluster of mushrooms. This characteristic is synonymous with the broader concept of community. It is indeed possible to manufacture it at large scale, which opens up various opportunities for production. The idea can be effectively executed if it is selected as the final concept for development. This innovative material can be found in products as a key component of a composite that is thoughtfully made up of natural fibers such as hemp, bamboo, or jute. It offers a very nice feel and an inviting texture that enhances user experience. Furthermore, it elevates the phone beyond a mere consumer electronic device. Being 100% biodegradable, it contributes positively to environmental sustainability, giving the phone a much higher purpose in today's eco-conscious market.

Intended look & feel

Products made of biodegradable materials or inspired by them have a certain look and feel, a certain softness that was the guiding factor for this project.
